A forklift is a powerful and indispensable tool in most businesses that require the loading and unloading of heavy goods. But, for all their benefits, forklifts also account for about 100 deaths and nearly 35,000 serious injuries each year. That’s alarming and quite ironic, isn’t it? Forklift-related accidents were often ignored by businesses in the past. Thankfully, however, the industry has shifted its focus on the safety of its workers. And to develop a culture of safety companies are taking every possible step. Let’s take a look at what companies are doing to ensure the safety of their employees when it comes to forklift safety.‍

Offering Forklift Safety Training

‍When it comes to forklift safety training, it’s clear that a little extra guidance is necessary for your forklift operators. So, we have outlined some of the most important components of a forklift safety program to help make it a success with your employees.

‍1. Get Management in On the Training Program

‍For your safety program to truly work, it’s important that you have the complete support of the management and leadership. For a safety program to be successful you need to build a culture from the top-down. When the safety of the employees is advocated and enforced by the strong leaders of the company it builds a sense of belongingness. This helps the employees retain the knowledge shared during the safety training program. So, start with opening a dialogue about safety with the key management officials in your business.

‍2. Evaluate Forklift Related Hazards

‍Once the leadership is on board, it’s time to actually begin creating the program. And, for that, you need to conduct a forklift-related company-wide safety analysis. You need to identify workplace hazards and locate weak points in pre-existing forklift safety procedures. It could be some of the smaller but very important things such as blind corners, inclines, high-traffic intersections, loading docks, etc. It’s important that the forklift operators, employees, and pedestrians know the safety protocols for navigating these areas.

‍3. Identify the Training Methods

‍Once you have identified the forklift-related issues, it’s time to address them. For that, you need to determine when and how you would train the forklift operators and pedestrians and what type of training you would be giving. When you begin the process of selecting training methods, be sure to provide both in-class and practical training for operators. As a business owner or manager, it’s your duty to ensure that the operator is comfortable with driving the forklift truck. You will have to go over all the processes with them in detail like loading and unloading procedures, operating on inclines, battery charging, and replacing LP tanks. So, prepare the content accordingly.

‍4. Train Your Employees

‍You have already identified forklift hazards and created the safety content to address those hazards. Now, it’s time to train your employees in forklift safety procedures. It’s important to be consistent when trying to reduce injuries and accidents in your company. Training provides that consistent knowledge refresher that employees need to keep safety at the forefront of their minds while working with forklift trucks. These training sessions are very important so make sure that they are highly engaging for maximum retention.

‍Installing Forklift Camera System

‍Along with providing training, you can also offer forklift drivers more control by installing forklift camera systems. A forklift camera is an excellent instrument that permits the operator to have different views around the lift truck. In most cases, the front area of the forklift is wholly obscured when it’s carrying a load. The forklift operators often struggle to get a better view of their surroundings, resulting in accidents or damaging goods. That’s where a Forklift Safety System comes in. It decreases the vulnerability faced by the forklift operators so they can be more productive. The installation of forklift cameras is absolutely simple and can be employed in the front, back, sides, or anywhere around the lift truck where visibility is limited. Thus the forklift camera makes it easier for the operator to get a clear view of the forks and rack. And another good thing about the forklift camera is that they can be installed on any type of forklift, even counterbalance lift trucks. With the camera, it’s easier for the operators to operate the forklift and easily pick up high loads.

•  Forklift Anti Collision

The forklift anti-collision system enables the driver to see the front and rear of the truck and features high-precision sensors with alarms for quick alerts. It’s not just beneficial for the forklift operator but also for the pedestrians, bicyclists, or anyone else in the vicinity.

•  Fork View Camera

For warehouses and storage units, where inventory is stored high on racks this is another great solution. With a fork-view camera system, visibility increases, making the operator aware of the positioning of the loads.
