FAQs—Explosion-Proof Class 1 Division 1 Cameras

Quick answers to the most common questions

What's the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2, and which do I need?

Zone 1 is an area where an explosive atmosphere is likely during normal operation, such as pump stations, tank farms and loading gantries. Zone 2 is an area where that atmosphere is unlikely and would only be brief if it happened. A camera rated for a higher-risk zone can be used in a lower one, but not the reverse. If your drawings mark a spot Zone 1 at a Teesside plant, it needs a Zone 1 camera, full stop. Send us your area classification and we'll match the rating.

It comes down to your zone rating, the gas group and temperature class for your atmosphere, the field of view you need to cover, and whether you want a fixed watch on one asset or a PTZ camera sweeping a wider area. Fixed cameras suit a single valve skid or gate; PTZ suits a large yard or jetty. Share your area classification and site layout, and we'll spec the exact model, whether it's for a compact unit near Ellesmere Port or a sprawling terminal on the Humber.

Any operation with flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust in the air. That covers North Sea oil and gas out of Aberdeen and Sullom Voe, refineries and petrochemicals at Grangemouth and Fawley, the chemical cluster on Teesside, fuel and tank storage around Liverpool and Immingham, and manufacturing sites across Greater Manchester handling solvents or fine powders. If part of your site is zoned for explosion risk, that's where our cameras belong.

Send us your zone classification, the number of cameras, and whether you need fixed or PTZ, and we'll return a specced quote for your site. We supply and support installations across the UK, including Aberdeen, Grangemouth, Teesside, Liverpool and Manchester, and we act as a full safety partner rather than just a supplier. Inquire now and our team will scope the right explosion-proof camera setup for your operation.

It's the same hazard, labelled two different ways. The Class and Division system is North American, while the UK and most of the world use the IECEx Zone system, which is what DSEAR and your site's area classification are built on. So a Class 1 Division 1 area is your Zone 1. The reason you'll still see "Class 1 Division 1" on UK enquiries is that a lot of operators, from Aberdeen platforms to Teesside chemical plants, work to project specs written by US owners or EPC contractors. Our cameras are certified to both, so you're covered either way and never have to re-spec because the paperwork uses a different label.
